Abstract 1996 Summary extracted from 1994 paper notes that "Policy failure is a major constraint on sustainability, responsible for much of the current environmental damage in the agricultural sector. It is therefore essential to examine the quality of the national policy framework. For maximum efficiency and coherence in an individual country, SARD should unfold within the context of a national sustainable development strategy, an essential tool for improved governance."

Abstract 1996 extracted from a longer paper notes that: "Farming activities everywhere should be conducted so as not to deplete the resource base or degrade the environment. Amongst actions required is better understanding of how farm households respond to policy signals and to use this knowledge in formulating policies. Improved methods are needed to feed relevant community and farm-household information into the policy making process."

Abstract Originally published by Carrying Capacity Network (1994). "This report focuses on the interdependency of land, food, and population in the U.S. economy. The United States is in a privileged situation compared to other nations in the world: the per capita endowment of natural resources is relatively high because of the relatively low population density. At the same time, the United States is seriously risking loosing this privilege if more attention is not given to the control of population growth (including immigration), the sustainable management of natural resources, and the development of alternative energy sources. The aim of this report is to increase the awareness of policy makers and the public of the importance of the interaction between population growth, self-sufficiency in food production, standard of living and, ultimately, national security."

Abstract "At present Russian agriculture is in disarray as a result of the general economic decline and the incomplete restructuring of the agriculture sector. A recent 2020 Vision discussion paper, Russia's Food Economy in Transition: Current Policy Issues and the Long-Term Outlook, examines long-term trends in production and consumption as Russia's food economy undergoes a fundamental transition. The paper, by Joachim von Braun, Eugenia Serova, Harm tho Seeth, and Olga Melyukhina, finds that economic restructuring has been accompanied by a 39 percent fall in GDP and by shrinking production of major food items, including grain, potatoes, milk, and meat. Overall agricultural production dropped by 21 percent from 1991 to 1994. "
